VIDEO: Rotary Tree of Goodwill launched in Worthing

Worthing mayor Michael Donin officially launched the Christmas appeal at Holder’s Corner, in Montague Street.

“The Rotary club, year round, supports all the worthy causes and charities,” he said.

“Christmas is a very important part of Worthing and I believe people are generous in Worthing. I urge people to dig deep and support this Rotary club Christmas appeal.”

For nearly 60 years, Worthing Rotary Club has displayed a 30ft Christmas tree in the town centre.

The Tree of Goodwill is sponsored by local businesses to provide a festive atmosphere and promote the goodwill of the Christmas season.

Worthing Rotary president Val Turner said: “This is our main fundraising event of the year. Rotarians will be here collecting every day up to and including Christmas Eve.

“Quite a large sum goes to the Salvation Army for the Christmas food parcels. Originally, these were done by the Rotary club but the Salvation Army took over the running and we provide the money.

“The rest goes towards the club’s communities fund for local good causes.

“We support a whole range of things, including young people who otherwise would not get the opportunities without our help.”
