Commuters will see a display of the town’s artistic talent thanks to a project to brighten up Crawley Railway Station.
Cllr Vanessa Cumper (Con, West Green) has joined forces with Sussex Rail Partnership, Crawley CVS and seven local artists in an aim to decorate the station with 110 boards of art by local people.
There are 10 boards on display at the station at the moment.
Cllr Cumper explained that everybody wasinvited to add their personal touch to the mural which could even help to boost the town’s economy.
She said: “This project has been a long time coming.
“It’s all about showing the talents of people in Crawley so anyone coming to Crawley can see this is a vibrant town with lots of talented people and come and visit and meet us.”
Children’s artwork from Southgate Primary School and West Green Primary School is ready to be displayed in the waiting room on Platform 1 and grants are being sought now to progress the larger art boards on Platform 2.
The work can be any size as it will be placed on one of the large montage boards.
Cllr Cumper can arrange for one of the project artists to visit anyone who needs assistance or who needs their art to be picked up.
She added: “The art can be painting, drawing, photography, textiles anything creative as all of the finished works will be photographed and transferred to acrylic weatherproof boards to give a riot of colour to brighten the place up.
“Each group can put their logo on their piece so it’s recognised who made each one.
“In order to bring all of the pieces together a crow in flight will be on each board, in a slightly different pose on each board to give the illusion of the crow flying along with the train as it departs the station.”
Pene Mather, development officer for the Arun Valley Line Sussex Community Rail Partnership, said: “A lot of the stations in the area are graced with beautiful buildings but Crawley station has always been a bit concrete.
“This allows Crawley artists to share with station users and those passing through the true diversity of the town.”
