VIDEO: Funding helps Shoreham community group spread the word

A GRANT and support from a Shoreham business are helping spread the word about a community café in the town.

Southlanders Community Café has been up and running at Milward Court, in Wilmot Road, since June, 2005, but it has never had professional advertising until now.

A promotion exercise was carried out two years ago, but this was done in-house, with a leaflet produced and printed by the community group.

Chairman Ann Martin said: “We wanted to make it more professional and interesting for people to read.”

A £489 grant was provided by the Co-op Community Fund, and Gemini Print, in Dolphin Road, Shoreham, provided its services at a greatly reduced rate.

Print consultant Patrick Lynn helped the group to redesign its leaflet to look more eye-catching and went along on Monday for the launch.

He said: “We try to support local charities and good causes. This is an amazing cause because it is self-funded. It is a really good project.”

Mrs Martin said the leaflets would be delivered to 2,000 homes to encourage people from outside Milward Court to go along.

“We want to get the message across that we are open to everyone to visit us,” she explained.

“We hope it will encourage people to volunteer so that we can take the group forward to maybe open on another day to do something different.

“We have never had a professional form of advertising and I feel this will encourage people to think of us in a more serious light and that we are here to help the people.”

The new leaflet was launched alongside a cake and preserve sale.

Mrs Martin said: “We try to do something different to get people to come in and see that we are here.

“This is a focal point in our community, being the only place within reach that people can meet up for a chat to get out of their houses.”

The café is open on Mondays, from 9am to noon, when computers are available to access the internet and a raffle is held to raise money for outings. On Fridays, there is an exercise class at 9.30am, a click and chat group at 11am and lunches at 12.30pm.
