Robert Nye, managing and horticultural director at IR Trading said the section of A24 Dorking Road outside D W Nye builders merchants in Kingsfold floods and sometimes freezes, risking a serious crash.

He added: “Even without freezing weather the water, after rain, covers the entire south bound carriageway and is very deep on the inner edge as the road has a significant camber.

“When I watch the vehicles approaching the hazard many slow rapidly, many enter the deep water which puts their vehicle at risk and some swerve into the oncoming carriage way.”

Robert, 66, said he first raised concerns around a year ago with West Sussex County Council

He added: “It’s been like it for a long time.

“You know a hazard when you see one.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

But the boss at the garden project company said recently the flood has been taking much longer to dissipate after submerging the road.

Robert fears if an older or unsure driver were to come across the flood while driving their vehicle they may crash, hurting themselves or others in the process.

He is calling for a concrete culvert to be built to make the road drain better and to remove the hazard from the A24.

In a statement, a West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear of any accident and take road safety matters very seriously.

“Our contractors attended on Tuesday, 6 April, and cleaned out the drain. Further investigations are ongoing.
