The van driver was also hospitalised with chest and shoulder pain, the spokesperson added, after the collision on the A272 Cowfold Road near Bolney and Cowfold at about 7.40am.

SECAmb initially sent an ambulance and two cars to the scene, and the vehicles were joined by another ambulance and car, the spokesperson said.

The woman was released from her car by firefighters using hydraulic rescue equipment.

Both drivers were taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The collision has caused traffic chaos this morning, with motorists being diverted to the A23 where long queues of traffic have formed.

The photo above was taken by Cowfold resident Graham Hazard at 9.45am.

He said: “Traffic was at a stand-still, with cars being forced to turn round when they found a police car blocked off the main road.

“If you block off the main street, it looks like the village is closed for business, nobody can get in or out.”

PC Chris Welsh, of the Haywards Heath road policing unit, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or noticed either vehicle being driven just prior to the collision.”

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information can contact police by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 101, quoting serial 211 of 8/9.
