Tower at fort to boost safety

The building, a former searchlight and watchtower on land owned by Shoreham Port, has been vacant for several years but in the next couple of months will become National Coastwatch Institution Station 38.

The NCI will use the building as a watchtower to train volunteer watchkeepers and, eventually, to obtain Declared Facility Status, which will see it providing a look-out over weekends and other busy periods.

Obtaining the status is reliant on recruiting and training sufficient numbers of volunteers over the next two years '“ a process that can only start in earnest when the building is completed and equipped.
