Talented Oakmeeds mathematicians win inter-school quiz at Sussex University

Gifted and talented mathematicians from Burgess Hill won an inter school quiz on a visit to Sussex University last Wednesday (September 10).

Oakmeeds Community College students Zymon Wisniewski, Kieran Holt, Philippa Worsley, Rosie Bennet, Timmy Hawes, Rhys Bowles and Tom Andrews were accompanied by director of learning Danielle Brown for a Taking Maths Further Day.

At the end of the day Zymon, Kieran and Timmy beat ten other schools to win the quiz.

Further Maths Day included hands-on workshops, talks from mathematicians and information about academic pathways in mathematics.

Students learnt how centres of mass are used in balancing objects at different angles and how to create perfect equilibrium.

Simon, Kieran, Philippa and Rosie perfectly balanced Timmy Hawes on a plank lying across two cubes.

The students were inspired by the maths magic tricks, involving ties and chains.

They took part in a team problem solving competition learnt the links between statistics, probability and criminal prosecutions.
