Surgeon hits out at cancer care transfer

A warning that the enforced move of specialist upper GI tract surgery from Worthing Hospital would be a disasterfrom the hospital, has come from retired surgeon George Dickson.

His comments follow the public news that specialist laparscopic upper GI surgery, which has been so successful at Worthing is to be switched to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Mr Dickson, who was a general surgeon specialising in cancer treatment for breast and upper GI tract at Worthing Hospital from 1972-2000 told the WSG: " I strongly believe that the senior members of our professions do not appreciate the damage that will be done to the majority of district general hospitals if they are not allowed to perform major cancer surgery. I think that the quality of care for all patients will be poorer.
