Strokes of genius at Ditchling from three contemporary artists

Ditchling’s rich artistic heritage is associated with the likes of Eric Gill, Joseph Cribb and Edward Johnston but male supremacy is giving way to exciting female talent in an exhibition of contemporary art in Ditchling.

Fran White, whose colourful textile designs and paintings can be seen in The Linen Shop and Gallery in the Carfax, Horsham will be showcasing her work as part of the much anticipated Ditchling Artists’ Open Houses event, which coincides with the Brighton Festival in May.

While studying woven and printed textiles at Farnham, Fran discovered she was a painter and she has been honing her talent as an artist alongside developing her business, designing and selling woven linen fabrics for use in interior design and clothing.

Jane Cattlin is a full-time artist and designer with an impressive background in fashion design. She works in acrylic, gouache and watercolour to produce bold and colourful paintings that have won several awards, including the prestigious Chichester Open.

Curiosity about the world around her prompted fellow contemporary artist Juliet Robertson to interpret what she saw through her painting.

Juliet will be showing a selection of her exquisite floral, interior and landscape paintings and like Fran and Jane, her original and multifarious work has been showcased at the Chichester Open.

Jane, Fran and Juliet have called their joint exhibition in Ditchling ‘JFJ’ and their reputation among the best artists in Sussex is likely to attract lively interest.
