Storm Clodagh creating ‘mad’ surfing conditions at West Wittering beach

While the turbulent weather caused by Storm Clodagh has brought plenty of disruption to parts of the UK, windsurfers and kitesurfers in the Chichester area have been revelling in the super strong winds at West Wittering beach.

But those taking to the seas have been warned the conditions are not for the faint hearted.

This brilliant picture is of Mark Perry, who windsurfs from West Wittering Windsurf Club.

Mark is shown half way round a forward loop in winds gusting up to 55 knots, force 10 to 11.

Photographer Simon Bassett took the fabulous action photograph.

He said: “These conditions are not for the faint hearted and not without risk but experienced riders along the coast have been out in what most people would consider mad conditions.

“Windsurfers have been using their smallest sails and boards 3.4 and 3.7 square metre sails and 5 meter kites, but even with these the savage gusts have made it heavy work on the water.

“The unusual turbulent conditions produced by this storm are likely to be here for the few weeks and this weekend will be no exception with more 50 knot plus winds expected for Saturday and Sunday.”
