Stores in Selsey, East Wittering and Westbourne were among the first 14 to launch Love Your Neighbourhood this month.

The rest of the company’s food stores, funeral homes and other businesses, including those in Chichester, Bognor Regis, Petersfield and Liphook, will join the programme in the spring.

Community groups, charities and not-for-profit groups are encouraged to get involved with the pilot project for the new community programme. The initiative aims to make a positive difference to the local area.

Jessica Hughes, communications and community manager, said: “At The Southern Co-operative, we have been developing an all-encompassing approach to our business’ community activity. As a result, we have listened to our customers, members and colleagues to develop the Love Your Neighbourhood programme, which will help us to engage with our communities at a much more local level.”

The scheme will address four key social themes, as identified in a survey of more than 4,000 members and colleagues. These are greener, healthier, safer and more inclusive neighbourhoods. Local applications to help achieve this are welcomed.

The Southern Co-operative will supply goods in kind and funding, as well as build local fundraising partnerships for those who successfully apply to the programme.

Jessica added: “We are encouraging all community groups, charities, or not-for-profit groups to visit their local participating The Southern Co-operative store or funeral home and find out how our colleagues can help get involved.”
