Stand pipes loom closer

Water supplies and the environment in West Sussex are still at serious risk because of the drought and not enough action is being taken by some water companies, people and businesses to save water, the Environment Agency said on Tuesday.

And with a drought order being imposed in neighbouring Surrey on Monday, the prospects of standpipes in West Sussex loomed closer.

The last drought order in the county, with water supplies turned off to many homes and standpipes installed for each street, was in 1976.
