The ‘modernisation’ initiative will see HMRC close 43 offices across the country and sizeable regional centres in Croydon and Stratford opened.

Worthing’s two current offices will be closed between 2020 and 2021 but the new specialist centre will replace it, in a location yet to be finalised.

The Worthing offices currently employ 660 members of staff. A spokesman for HMRC was unable to confirm whether any new jobs would be created, or any lost as a result of the new centre being built.

Chief executive Lin Horner said: “HMRC has too many expensive, isolated and out-dated offices.

“This makes it difficult for us to collaborate, modernise our ways of working, and make the changes we need to transform our service to customers and clamp down further on the minority who try to cheat the system.”

HMRC has pledged to ‘do everything it reasonably can’ to relocate staff in order to minimise redundancies.
