THE Shoreham Slipways Group has launched its first website, using funding from Adur County Local Committee.

A grant of £500 was approved last Wednesday, to help with the website and pay for the group’s planning application for a new slipway in Shoreham.

It is bizarre that a town with a maritime history, and so much to offer, should have systematically rendered the existing slipways and hards useless

Brendan Whelan, Shoreham Slipways Group chairman

Chairman Brendan Whelan said the launch of the website had been delayed while they concentrated on registering the application for a slipway at Adur Recreation Ground.

“It is bizarre that a town with a maritime history, and so much to offer, should have systematically rendered the existing slipways and hards useless,” he said.

“The much-needed slipway at the rec will help redress the situation by providing a ramp and a reasonable amount of parking for cars and trailers.

“We would like supporters of the slipway to register their comments, not only to help us with the planning application, but to show the various official bodies that there is strong support from across the community.

“The public slipway will not only be used for leisure purposes but will help create a more interesting river scene which will encourage visitors to the town and help boost the local economy.”

The slipways group has been campaigning for a new slipway for some time, investigating various locations.

Mr Whelan said none of the potential locations was ideal but the rec offered the best compromise.
