Shoreham Footbridge ‘on course’ for 2013

West Sussex County Council remains on course to complete the construction of the Shoreham Footbridge in summer 2013.

The first two piles have already been installed from the temporary causeway on the south side of the River Adur.

County council contractor Osborne has moved the heavy piling equipment to barges ahead of the installation of the remaining five piles.

Temporary cable diversions have been completed to allow piling operations in the river to begin.

And despite challenging ground conditions, BT Openreach has installed ducting under the river ready for cables to be diverted permanently.

The next stage of the work will see Osborne demolish the northern spans of the footbridge and install a temporary walkway from the footbridge to Coronation Green.

The existing footbridge is now closed to the public while the work is carried out.

It is expected to remain closed for at least six weeks.

A free shuttle bus service is running every 15 minutes while the footbridge is closed and volunteers are providing assistance at either end of the footbridge to help people get used to the temporary arrangements.
