Sea cadets recognised with trio of awards

T.S Vanguard’s chairman David Shipley was presented with the meritorious service certificate at the lord-lieutenant’s awards, while Kurt Smith was named cadet of the year .

The Broadwater-based organisation also won the SSAFA Irlam Trophy.

In a citation, Mr Shipley was recognised for his ‘vibrant and inimitable style of leadership’, pushing forward major refurbishment at the unit.

It read: “David is supportive, engaging, and one who acts selflessly for the betterment of the organisation. Mr Shipley is an excellent role model.”

Cadet Corporal Smith was described as a ‘dedicated, well respected and smart’ cadet,

A citation read: “Corporal Smith is an integral part of the Royal Marines cadet detachment, offering his experiences to both younger RMC cadets and the Sea Cadets at Worthing.”

The duo and representatives of the unit were invited to Worthing Borough Council full council by mayor Sean McDonald to recognise the achievement.

Mr McDonald also introduced the council to his mayoral cadets, Lance Corporal Christopher Emery, from Lancing, representing the Royal Marines Cadets and Able Cadet Lilly Thomas, representing the Sea Cadets.
