Scheme to get heavy lorries off Sussex roads

Ascheme to cut the number of heavy lorries delivering to busy town and city centres in West Sussex is envisaged as part of the county's transport plans for the future.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr Tex Pemberton made a fact-finding visit to Bristol to see a similar scheme.

He toured a complex on the edge of the city where HGV deliveries for some retailers are transferred to smaller vehicles before continuing their journey.

The draft 10-year Transport Plan for West Sussex proposes a similar initiative.

Cllr Pemberton said:"The scheme I saw in Bristol involved a consolidation centre where large numbers of lorries drop their loads and then only one or two smaller vehicles continued into the centre to make the deliveries.

"I was impressed by the standards that have been achieved in Bristol where during 18 months of the trial period not one item has been lost or damaged and all goods have been delivered on time."
