A CHICHESTER woman’s fundraising effort has charged past the original target – and is still going strong.

Jenny Ng wanted to support her 18-month-old niece, Eva Ng-Ho, who was born with a rare condition, and set out to raise £1,000 for the CHARGE Family Support Group.

But her efforts in the Chichester Half Marathon last month have already topped £2,500 and money is still being donated via the link www.justgiving.com/running-for-Eva.

Jenny said: “The run itself was amazing and I felt in high spirits for the first ten miles but started to flag during the last three.

“The last few miles were very tough, but thinking of Eva, my sister Jemma, Steven, and all the support kept me plodding to the end.”

CHARGE syndrome is a rare genetic condition which affects one in every 10,000 babies born worldwide.

It is a complex condition which impacts on many of the senses. Babies born with CHARGE often have complex heart problems, breathing issues, hearing and/or vision loss and other factors which impact on their development and communication.

Eva is deaf, visually impaired, requires an artificial breathing tube and has to be fed through a permanent feeding tube. She needs round-the-clock care from parents Steven Ho and Jemma Ng-Ho at their home in Norwich.

Jemma, 33, said: “Everyone has been so generous and it will go towards helping more CHARGE families like ourselves.

“Though we could not be there to support Jenny on the day, we were behind her all the way.”

Steven, 29, added: “It’s been an extremely difficult 18 months looking after Eva, with her multiple disabilities, but she is the happiest girl in the world and we feel blessed to be her parents.”

Jenny wanted to do something to show her support because the distance means she cannot visit as often as she would like.

“Training was tough but it has been great to be able to spread awareness of this special charity, and the level of support so far has been amazing,” she explained.

The support group is a small charity, run entirely by volunteers, and provides a support network for families.

Jenny said: “The sponsorship raised will enable the charity to continue to be there for people with CHARGE and bring these families together more.”
