Rude Mechanicals perform music from new CD

The group has previously delighted audiences at the St Nicolas Lane church with their versatile and spirited playing.

Instruments include flute, fiddle, guitar, concertina, mandolin, banjo, accordion and even, on occasions, a nyckelharpa.

This concert, at 7.30pm on Saturday, February 6, will feature material from The Rude Mechanicals’ new CD, Lady Pentweazle’s Maggot.

Church treasurer John Simpson said: “Their blend of traditional and new songs and tunes are not to be missed.

“As well as the first-class performances, enhanced by the superb acoustics, these concerts are especially memorable for the great atmosphere they generate.

“They re-create the flavour of medieval times when the church also served as the centre where local people could gather to make their own entertainment, and no doubt these walls would have seen similar scenes over the centuries.”

Doors open at 7pm and the bar will offer beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks to buy.

The event is in support of the Friends of St Nicolas, who maintain the fabric of the beautiful ancient church, a landmark and haven for the folk of Old Shoreham for well over 1,000 years.

Looking down on the concert will be Kings and Queens, a Green Man and a cat, which could double as the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. These are some of the Norman carvings which decorate the tower arches.

The 12th century masons displayed an impish sense of humour, as well as great skill, and finished off the arches with depictions of the local shellfish.
