Rotary Club helps to clear school's wooded area

Members of the Rotary Club of Bognor Regis spent a Saturday morning helping staff and parents of Downview Primary School clear a wooded area. The plan is to provide a Forest Classroom, and the school has arranged to receive professional advice on the area and more work will then be needed. This particular part of the grounds was badly in need of clearing as it had become a dumping ground for rubbish. The team hit their objective that morning.

This particular part of the grounds was badly in need of clearing as it had become a dumping ground for rubbish. The team hit their objective that morning.

James Martin, deputy headteacher at Downview Primary School, said: “A small group of Rotarians, Governors, parents and school staff got together to clear a section of wooded area at the back of the school. In two hours the group had cleared the site, trimmed trees and filled two skips!

“The next task is for the area to erect a perimeter fence and gates. Classes from Reception to Year Six will then be able to experience outdoor learning and fun – from stories in the woodland shade, shelter and den building to low ropes and toasting marshmallows.

“Members of school council have already made a brief visit to the new ‘classroom’ and are very excited about its future use.

“Nine year old Christopher said “It gives you a sense of space”, whilst Annie, also aged nine, is looking forward to having “time to chill”.’
