Protests about housing allocation for West Sussex

WEST Sussex has been told to find room for an additional 74,600 new homes between 2006 and 2026 in the final version of the South East Plan published last week.

This compares with 58,000 in the original plan, and the 64,100 recommended by an independent panel which carried out an inquiry into the plan.

Ministers have totally ignored local authorities throughout the county who have warned that there is not enough room or adequate infrastructure to support such unsustainable development.

The views of the South East England Regional Assembly, which warned about pressures on roads and transport also went unheeded.

Sussex has been hit by more homes, even though the numbers for the South East in general were lower than expected in the plan.

The plan, which has been published after six years of debate and arguing, has prompted furious reaction from councils, MPs and groups throughout West Sussex.

Local councils have been advised to take their time in dealing with these figures because a change in Government could see things change.

West Sussex County Council leader Henry Smith said it appeared the Government had not realised what was happening in the country and the world around.
