Protest targets Francis Maude

The event targeting the Government’s cabinet office minister is part of a programme of action over the government’s cuts to their pensions, the Public and Commercial Services union has announced.

The demonstration will be from around 12pm outside Mr Maude’s constituency office in Madeira Avenue, Horsham.

Mr Maude is one of the key ministers involved in the ongoing dispute over public sector pensions.

Similar protests are being held at the same time in the constituencies of education secretary Michael Gove, work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith and business secretary Vince Cable.

The union this week announced that its 250,000 civil and public services members will be holding national strikes with other unions over pensions on May 10 and in June.

PCS London and south east regional secretary Keith Johnston said: “Public servants are being forced to pay more and work up to eight years longer for thousands of pounds less in retirement, at the same time as their jobs are threatened and living standards are being driven down.

“Our message to the minister is that instead of punishing us for problems caused by wealthy bankers, his government should be investing to help our communities to thrive and our economy to grow.”
