POLL: Bid to make Horsham a Dementia Friendly Community

Age UK Horsham District is pushing for the town to become a Dementia Friendly Community as the number of people being diagnosed with the condition is set to rise across the county.

At a meeting in Horsham on Wednesday (October 1) representatives of charities including Know Dementia, Alzheimer’s Society and Crawley Dementia Alliance came down to discuss the possibility of Horsham becoming a Dementia Friendly Community.

The Dementia Friendly Communities programme is an initiative spearheaded by the Alzheimer’s Society and focuses on improving inclusion and quality of life for people living with dementia in specific areas.

By 2015 the Government plans on having 20 towns, cities and villages across the country become Dementia Friendly Communities.

The Alzheimer’s Society has listed steps on how towns and cities can become dementia friendly communities.

These include diagnosing the condition as early as possible; challenging the stigma many people have towards the condition; educating organisations and businesses about dementia, and including people with the condition in community life.
