In honour of what would have been Captain Tom’s 101st birthday, the Captain Tom 100 invites fundraisers to complete challenges based around the number 100.

Anything from walking 100 metres, to baking 100 cakes or writing 100 letters, donations can then go to any charity, including the Captain Tom Foundation.

Tarring councillor Martin McCabe submitted a motion to Worthing Borough Council, ahead of the full council meeting on April 20, for the authority to promote the Captain Tom 100.

Mayor Lionel Harman has joined the call.

““Over the last year we have lost many good people who have inspired and motivated us it make the world a kinder and more respectful place to live,” he said.

“Most recently two men in their 100th year, HRH Price Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, and Captain Sir Tom Moore Both have shaped not only our country but also the world, so it is a fitting tribute to them that we support the charities they held dear.

The Captain Tom 100 will run from April 30 to May 3 and participants can share their feats through #captaintom100.

Mr McCabe said he will be completing his own challenge, continuing his work of the last few years by pointing at 100 potholes.

“I’m so grateful to our Mayor for promoting the Captain Tom 100,” he said.

“Captain Sir Tom inspired us in our hour of darkness. He brought our nation together and showed the best of British.

“Lockdown has had a profound impact on all our mental health.

“There has also been a disproportionate impact on younger people and the disadvantaged. Helping those in need was something that Captain Tom was so passionate about.

“The Captain Tom 100 will support charities including The Mix, Young Minds and Place2Be who are doing incredible work in this space supporting our young people’s mental health as we emerge from this crisis.

“I urge others to take part and join Captain Tom’s Army of Hope.”
