Work to improve Haywards Heath traffic lights to take three months

This is required because the existing signals at the junctions at Muster Green and The Broadway are reaching the end of their lifespan, with replacement parts difficult to source.

The refurbishment will utilise the latest equipment for improved reliability and energy efficiency.

Work is due to start on Monday (March 8).

Improvements will include:

• Above-ground detectors, which detect when pedestrians are present and alter the timing of the traffic signals;

• Tactile cones on the underside of the control box to help visually-impaired pedestrians;

• LED equipment to improve visibility for road users and keep energy and maintenance costs down;

• Upgraded software to improve the efficiency of the junction.

There will be road restrictions in place during the works, to protect the public and the workforce on site. These include:

• Temporary traffic lights, which will be in use throughout;

• Some lane closures which will be implemented during the works;

• Access to site being maintained at all times;

• The existing pedestrian crossings being temporarily taken out of use;

• Approximately two un/loading bays and the bus stop being temporarily suspended outside the parade of shops for the duration.

The traffic signals will be manually controlled during working hours, and the work is expected to take three months to complete.

The work will usually take place between 7.30am and 5pm Monday through Friday, although the traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works.

Due to the extent of the works and the traffic management required, delays are likely and road users are encouraged to find alternate routes where possible, especially during peak times.
