Verification of Crawley election votes underway

Today’s the day when the people of Crawley find out whether their council will be led by Labour or the Conservatives.

There were 48 candidates vying for 14 seats on Thursday (May 6) and, with Labour holding 15, the Conservatives 16 and two Independents, every single vote will have counted.

Verification of the ballots from the borough elections as well as those of the county and Police & Crime Commissioner elections has just started at K2 leisure centre.

The 60 counters – five on each of the 12 tables – should start the county and borough counts from around noon, although that is just an estimated start time.

The Police & Crime Commissioner votes will be counted on Monday.

By the end of the day, the borough council should have a full complement of councillors again.

Two seats – in Ifield and Southgate – have been vacant since the deaths of Geraint Thomas and Raj Sharma, while a third – in Tilgate – was vacated when Francis Guidera resigned.
