Still time to have a say on plans to transform Bognor Regis seafront site

There is still time to have your say on plans to transform a key Bognor Regis seafront site.

Monday, 1st March 2021, 4:12 pm

Arun District Council has been provisionally awarded £1.2million following a successful bid to Coast to Capital to completely revive Place St Maur, an empty area of concrete hardstanding right next to the Regis Centre.

The plan is to transform it into an attractive and welcoming space that also creates a stronger connection between the seafront and town centre.

Resign consultants LUC were appointed to prepare design proposals and support the council in delivering the preferred scheme.

Initial proposals include water jets, a creative lighting scheme and modern seating areas to encourage people to relax and enjoy the setting.

The improvements could include dynamic paving, bringing a ‘wow factor’ to the space, with possible concept options drawn up.

A consultation board says: “A paving tapestry will form the centre piece to the regenerated Place St. Maur. Emerging concepts for the paving design take their inspiration from the Bognor Regis seafront with references including organic wave-like flows, geometric forms echoing the ever changing sand ripples and abstract coastal wildlife patterning.

“All paving options will be exploring how the design can be potentially extended across the Esplanade to better connect Place St Maur to the seafront in the future.”

A green corridor could be created near Mountbatten Court providing a slower route through the site with trees, planting and resting places.

There could also be a play area for younger children as well as a cafe spill-out space next to the Regis Centre.

Areas of planting lawns and trees could be created in the southern part of the site as a natural extension to the mounds, creating shelter, shade, seating and views out to the seafront.

The designs for the site focus on keeping the space as flexible as possible so that events can be held but keeping it attractive and interesting so that it will be a popular space to visit all year round.

A consultation on the initial proposals runs until Monday March 8.

The consultation can be viewed, and a questionnaire completed, via the Arun District Council website and at

Anyone unable to access the consultation online can call 01903 737500 to request a paper copy of the plans and questionnaire.

Work is due to begin in Autumn 2021 after all the proposals have been considered and a final plan to reflect the public’s wish list drawn up.
