Around 20,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetable waste which could be recycled ends up in landfill every year in West Sussex.

That waste could be used as compost to feed residents’ gardens, but instead costs West Sussex County Council £1.6 million a year in landfill charges.

Discounted compost bins can be bought through the county council waste team’s partnership with ‘getcomposting.com’.

David Barling, WSCC’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “Composting is free, good for the environment and easy to do.

“With the discounted compost bins available, there really is no excuse to not start straight away!”

Common kitchen items that can be composted include:

• Fruit & vegetable scraps and waste

• Tea bags

• Egg shells

Coffee grinds

• Flour

• Paper

• Card

• Cardboard (shredded)

Mr Barling added: “There are so many everyday items that can be composted, as well as grass cuttings and hedge clippings.

“The amount of money that could be saved through composting would help the council to spend more money on other services.”
