The car park, behind the Denne Road Drill Hall, is currently only used by season ticket holders from local businesses, and stands mostly empty at all other times.

At a meeting on Thursday (September 20), members of Horsham District Council’s cabinet voted to introduce a short-stay system outside business hours, which should bring in around £12,000 a year.

With Piries Place currently closed for a rebuild, there has been concern about the loss of parking spaces, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

In the first instance, the council plans to use some old pay and display machines it has in storage, with plans to replace them with newer models should the car park prove popular.

It will be open between 6pm and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday, for maximum three-hour stays.

Members agreed pricing should be in-line with the nearby Denne Road car park, at £1 in the evening, £1.50 on Sunday and Bank Holidays, with all other times being charged at £1.40 for one hour, £2.80 for two and £4.20 for three.

A public consultation into the plan will run until October 19 before the car park opens to the public on November 1.
