Former high sheriff from Chichester appointed deputy lieutenant for West Sussex

A former high sheriff from Chichester has been appointed a deputy lieutenant for West Sussex.

Patrick Burgess, high sheriff for 2013/14, is one of three people appointed to the ceremonial office by the lord lieutenant Susan Pyper this week as recognition for distinguished service to the community.

The post includes representing the lord lieutenant at formal functions, award ceremonies, citizenship ceremonies or attending Remembrance Day services.

Mr Burgess said: “I am very honoured and delighted to be appointed a deputy lieutenant and, so, to be able to serve and support the lord lieutenant in the demanding and important role she undertakes in West Sussex on behalf of HM the Queen.”

He is a trustee of the Chichester Cathedral Restoration and Development Trust and chairman of the Friends of the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Arundel, and is also a reader there.

Mr Burgess was recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours earlier this year for services to young people and the community and also holds the Grand Cross of the Most Venerable Order of St John.

He is also a past chairman of the Council of St. John for Sussex, and as chancellor of the Order sits on Council and Committees overseeing the international activities of St. John.

He qualified as a solicitor in 1972, became a partner of Gouldens in the City, and eventually senior partner. He is currently chairman of Intu Properties.

He is past master of the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers of the City of London, and liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Solicitors.

He and his wife Maggie live in Chichester and have three adult children and six grandchildren.
