Mrs Hamilton (Con, The Witterings), who has been in the role since 2016, was nominated by leader Eileen Lintill.

There was one challenger for the post, with Lib Dem leader Adrian Moss nominating Clare Apel (Lib Dem, Chichester West), who has served as vice-chairman for the past two years.

Mr Moss said: “I think she’s done an exceptional job and I think it’s the appropriate time for her to take over as chair of this council.”

It wasn’t to be, though, and Mrs Apel lost to Mrs Hamilton by 17 votes to 15.

Henry Potter (Con, Goodwood) was the only nominee for vice-chairman.
