Police management of travellers a ‘success’

POLICE have been praised for the way they handled the removal of a large group of travellers illegally camped on council-owned land last week.

Up to 50 caravans were moved on from Nepcote Green, in Findon, on Thursday, only to make their way to Sompting recreation ground, where a community church fun day was taking place.

However, they were once again moved on by police, this time in under two hours.

John Miles, 62, of Lotts Lane, Sompting, was at the community event when the travellers arrived.

He said: “People went over to try and speak to them and were just given abuse.”

He said he felt sorry for the organisers.
