Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the A286 at Henley Hill between Midhurst and Fernhurst.

The accident is believed to have happened early yesterday morning (Sunday, March 5).

The emergency services were alerted at 12.50pm yesterday after a silver Mercedes was spotted by a member of the public down a steep embankment.

A police spokesman said: “Sadly the driver, a 32-year-old man from London, was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s officer has been informed. The road was closed for around six hours for recovery work on Sunday afternoon.”

Sgt Peter Verney from the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit said: “We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the Mercedes driving along the A286 or in Midhurst town centre between 2am and 9am on Sunday morning.”

Witnesses can email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting reference Operation Chatham.
