Petworth man ‘seriously injured’ in crash

A man from Petworth suffered serious head injuries after his car left the road and crashed into a tree last night north of the town.

The accident happened at around 8.20pm, on Tuesday, November 17, at Elkham Corner, and Balls Cross Road was closed until 1.40am, according to police.

The 34-year-old man had to be cut from his black Mitsubishi FTO and was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “A 34-year-old man from Petworth sustained serious head injuries when his car collided with a tree at Elkham Corner, north of the town, on Tuesday, November 17.

“It happened at around 8.20pm while the man was driving a black Mitsubishi FTO west along Balls Cross Road.

“The car left the road and crashed into a tree.

“The casualty was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, by ambulance. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

“The road was closed until 1.40am on Wednesday, November 18.”

Fire crews from Petworth and Billingshurst also attended, along with a rescue tender from Chichester.

An air ambulance was also called to the scene, though the man travelled to hospital by road ambulance.
