Competitive fun was had by those at Westlake House Nursing Home on Tuesday, April 13, which is when the game’s inventor – American architect Alfredo Mosher Butts – was born in 1899.

General Manager, Kate Day said: “We love playing Scrabble here at Westlake House so naturally we wanted to celebrate World Scrabble Day.

“Some of the care staff got involved in the games too but they didn’t stand a chance – we have some very experienced and talented scrabble players living here!”

The home was in high spirits as residents and staff put their literacy and memory skills to the test as many games of Scarbble were played.

Resident Barbara Fisher said: “I grew up playing Scrabble and it always surprises me how competitive I become when I play!

“It is such a great game to keep your mind active and I love that you can play it on your own, in pairs or in teams.

“We have had some brilliant games today, it is wonderful that you can learn new words even at my age!
