Brownies from Pagham and Aldwick are among the first in the county to win a Duke of Cornwall award for coping with community emergencies.

Congratulations go to the 20 Brownies from 1st Pagham and Aldwick, who all successfully completed the first level of the Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Award.

They learned about different types of emergencies, what needs to be packed in a home emergency grab bag and who may need special assistance in an emergency.

West Sussex County Council chairman Pat Arculus presented the Brownies with their award certificates and badges at a special ceremony.

The award scheme was launched in response to significant flooding in Cornwall in recent years. It was set up by the Prince of Wales in 2012 after he had visited the village of Lostwithiel to see first hand the devastating aftermath of flooding, which left homes and businesses ruined.

Its aim is to increase a community’s ability to cope in emergencies and in West Sussex, the county council and Fire and Rescue Service are supporting the scheme.

Chris Scott, resilience and emergencies adviser, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and really helps to get the message out about what to do and how to help in emergency situations such as flooding.”

The award is for children aged five to 18 and has three different levels to complete.
