Police said he got out and tried to cross the road. He then collided with the Volkswagen in the second lane.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries. Police said he remains in a critical but stable condition and no-one else was injured.

The collision took place at about 7.35pm and the road was closed for more than five hours.

It was re-opened at about 12.40am on Saturday (October 6).

Anyone who saw what happened or with dash cam footage of the incident is asked to report it online or phone 101, quoting Operation Glandore.
