A community survey is currently underway, asking residents whether they would make good use of the planned fitness suite, community rooms, heated changing rooms and extended swimming season.

David Wood, chairman of the Arundel and Downland Community Leisure Trust, which runs the lido, said: “Thus far, the response from the public has been very encouraging.”

The Lido Extended Activities Project (LEAP) could see such swims available more often and Mr Wood said he was delighted to see Arundel Lido ‘leaping’ into the future.

He added: “This project has long been the dream of the trustees. Now that it is supported by both Arun District Council and Arundel Town Council, it has become a reality.

“We are very confident that it will move ahead and provide additional recreational and leisure facilities for the people of Arundel and beyond.”

The lido, in Queen Street, is open for Festive Swims on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Swimmers will be able to take the plunge from 10am to 1pm each day, in water at about 28 degrees C.

Warm changing areas will be available and warm seasonal refreshments will be on offer.

Entry is £5 per session for over-16s, £2.50 for under-16s and free for under-fives.

David May, a director of the trust, added: “We are delighted to be opening again during the festive period. Many people find an outdoor swim invigorating at this time of year – and it can certainly cure any of those rare hangovers.”
