Opinions are divided as parking curbs areproposed for village congestion point

West Sussex County Council is considering putting double yellow lines on Billingshurst Road opposite the One Stop store on the junction of Warnham Road. The parking bay would have a 20-minute waiting restriction under the plans aiming to make visibility and access safer for pedestrians and motorists.

But shoppers who spoke to the County Times this week had concerns. Ann Barclay, from Warnham, said: “It will be disastrous for the shop. Warnham Post Office closed so now we come here. People are only here for a few minutes to pick up a pint of milk.”

Steve Holdsworth, from the One Stop maintenance team, parks his van in the bay once a month. He said: “It will affect the shop massively without a shadow of a doubt. It will affect the drive through trade. I’m in and out of my van all the time.

“I don’t want to be walking miles lugging tools back and forth.”

But resident Jayne King, of Warnham Road, said: “Sometimes it’s really hard to pull out in my car. People pull up on the kerbs and it can be dangerous.”

A WSCC spokesman said: “Currently we are formally consulting on the proposals. There is no guarantee the proposals will be implemented, however we have two years from the commencement of the consultation to implement the proposals should the council wish to.

“If there are any unresolved objections or representations to the proposals the County Local Committee would need to consider the merit of these against any officer response at a CLC meeting and decide how they wish to proceed.

“Even if the scheme is implemented as proposed there is a significant area locally available for motorists to park all day without restriction.”
