Winter lecture programme begins

There will be over 20 weekly lectures and these will be on a wide variety of subjects including plants, birds, conservation, ancient woodland, butterflies and moths, and volcanoes. There will be something for everybody starting with “Colour and Structure of Butterfly Wings” by Maurice Moss.

The society has a proud history of raising the profile of wildlife in the local area and beyond. HNHS exists for everybody, whatever their level of knowledge, as there are always those who are keen to learn and others who are able to teach and encourage them. There are few organisations that specialise in wildlife locally and HNHS satisfies that need, with members in a wide area, most being within a 20 mile radius of Horsham. As well as lectures there are regular field trips and courses, some on specialist subjects such as plants, insects, or birds and there is co-operation with other groups when there is a need.

Some members are acknowledged experts in certain fields, but many are generalists who are interested in the wildlife around them. In these days of increased leisure time the study of wildlife is incredibly cheap. The amount of equipment needed is minimal and most items are easily obtainable. Useful items will be field guides, a hand lens, binoculars and a camera. There is a lot of information on the web which makes identification quite easy.

There are still areas where an organisation such as HNHS can help and this is the instruction given on courses, field trips, and walks, so if you or someone you know might be interested in joining then why not go along to a meeting and see what is on offer.
