The sale includes items to excite a diverse range of tastes, as well as offering investment opportunities for experienced and novice collectors alike. With estimates ranging from £50 to £12,000, the auction invites all budgets, and will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 23rd June.

A highlight for modern art enthusiasts is lot 1037 – Bridget Riley’s distinctive ‘Nineteen Greys’, which comprises four coloured optical illusion screen-prints and is expected to realise £4,000-6,000.

Bridget Riley CH CBE (born 1931) is a British artist who currently lives and works in London, Cornwall and the Vaucluse in France.

‘Nineteen Greys’ is characteristic of her Op Art style, developed during the 1960s, when she began to paint predominantly geometric forms using only black, white and variations of grey. The patterns are intended to explore the dynamism of sight and produce a disorienting effect on the eye, and viewers often experience the sensation of movement.

Exciting those of a more traditional taste is lot 1146 – Antoon Francois Heijligers’s ‘Interior Scene with girl lighting a fire’, which dates from 1857. Heijligers (1828 – 1897) was a Dutch artist, whose works have a proven success rate at auction: ‘The Town Crier, Brugés’ sold at Bonhams New Bond Street in 2003 for $6,000, while ‘At The Tavern’ sold at Christies in 2008 also for $6,000.

Bellmans host a specialist paintings section each month in their Antiques and Interiors auctions, and accept consignments all year round. Free, no obligation valuation days are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (with the exception of auction weeks) at their West Sussex Saleroom.
