Summer show success for Beeding and Bramber Horticultural Society

The Summer Show of Beeding and Bramber Horticultural Society, held on Saturday August 23 in Beeding and Bramber Village Hall, was a great success.

The number of entries, at 189, was down on last year’s exceptional figure of 200 but the fine weather brought more visitors through the doors.

One man ran away with most of the prizes: Jeff Dunstone, an allotment-holder and recent winner of Beeding in Blooms’s best allotment competition.

Jeff won the Ansdall Challenge Cup for the most points gained in the Show, the Phillips Cup for the best entry in Sections 1 and 2 (for flowers and vegetables), the Bert Harman Cup for single asters, the Garden News Top Tray and Top Vase awards, a Harry Phillips Memorial Shield for the most points in classes 92 and 93 and the RHS Banksian Medal for the winner of the most prize money in the horticultural classes of the Show.

Chairman of the Society, David Wells, took the Fun Cup for the member gaining most points in Sections 1 and 2, the Committee Cup for the competitor gaining most points in Section 1, the Hobjoin Cup for the best dahlia entry and the Avon Cup for the best entry of gladioli.

Other winners were Bruce Button who won the Beeding Court Cup for the runner-up in Section 1 (for flowers), Roger Hornsby who won the Adur Vale Cup for the runner-up in Section 2 and Charles Ashby who won a Harry Phillips Memorial Shield for the most points in classes 92 and 93.

There were some prizes left for the ladies. Denise Rose won the Maudlin Cup for the best trug of vegetables, Joan Hornsby the Farrow Cup for Cookery, Paula Wells the Arethusa Cup for the best exhibit in the cookery section and Diana Drawbridge the Evelyn Powell Memorial Trophy for her cake.

In the children’s section for those aged under 10 years, Daniel Waldron won the Mrs Harmsworth Cup, and for those aged 10 to 15 years, Brooke Wells and Lily Piper shared the Merion Trophy.
