Steyning Grammar students and Old Boys join together in Remembrance

A special ‘Act of Remembrance’ was held at Bolton House, where students, Old Boys and staff joined together in commemoration.

The service was opened by the school Chaplain, Rev Peter Butchers in front of the two school plaques on which are recorded the names of the old boys who gave their lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914-1918 & the Roll of Honour for Old Boys Killed or Missing 1939 -45.

The Chaplain reminded everyone that this annual Act of Remembrance is time for us all to stop and remember how conflict has touched the school.

He said “This is a special service between the Old Boys and the school and is particularly poignant in our 400th Anniversary year.”

Mrs Marion Gue, Steyning Grammar School, Chair of Governors gave the first reading ‘We shall keep the faith’.

Mrs Gue said: “Remembering former students who gave their lives reminds today’s students of what young people like them were called upon to do in service of their country.”

The Head Boy, Ross Cusdin and Head Girl Olivia Cleary read a list of former pupils who had fallen in both World Wars. This was followed by the laying of the wreaths.

Those who had fallen in more recent conflicts were also remembered in particular Lance Corporal James Lee Brynin, who was killed in active service in Afghanistan last year.

A reading from John 15.9-17 was given by staff member Mrs Gill Steele, followed by the

Reflection by Lieutenant Commander Derek Redman MBE.

The Deputy Head Boy – Will Carey read the ‘Sunset vigil ’before the school fell silent for two minutes. The final blessing was given by the Chaplain.

Michael Moore former old boy of the school said: “I started coming to this service 4 years ago as an act of remembrance as I feel that our dead should be remembered, and it is interesting that so many of us old boy’s want to come back.”

Two Steyning Grammar School students, Isabell Green & Christopher Nixon represented the school at the British Legion service held at the War Memorial in Steyning.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
