Praise for school’s Year 9 Giving Nation fundraisers

The students worked in tutor groups to raise money or awareness for a charity of their choice. The students chosen charities included Cancer Research UK, Care for the Wild, Down’s Syndrome Association, Mind and the Tyler Robinson Foundation.

The students worked hard with organising fundraising events including running tuck shops, selling wrist bands, cake sales and donation pots. £1,026 was raised by the students for their charities.

Ms Rys-Kent, Head of Learning for Life said: “Giving Nation allows young people to learn about the role and value of charities and the voluntary sector through planning, running and evaluating their own social action projects. They take informed, practical action giving their time, energy and voice to the issues and communities that they feel passionate about. We are all proud of the amount of effort the students put into the project and the amount of money raised is a reflection of their hard work and commitment”.

More than 400 schools took part in the challenge across the country and Glebelands was praised for the fundraising events that were carried out by our Year 9 students.

The school was also informed that the tutor group 9MJH had won the award for Best Fundraising action for the whole of the country. The tutor group had raised an amazing £850.00 for their charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation a charitable organization working to support families affected by Pediatric Cancer.

Five students were invited to the ceremony at the HM Treasury in London on Thursday 16th October where they were presented with the award as well as an additional donation of £500.

It was an exceptional day, with a very interesting workshop on how to make a media stunt and speeches by guests including Andy Thornton, CEO of Citizenship Foundation, Alex Holmes who won the Diana award for his anti-bullying campaign and Lord Phillips of Sudbury who talked about the importance of Citizenship and Values.

Leah Palmer one of the students who was responsible for the fundraising activities said “Overall we think that Giving Nation was a great experience, we gained many skills from teamwork to working with people outside of the school. We are so proud of our achievements and hope the money we raised helps people far less fortunate than us”.
