The Wedding Singer is a musical comedy packed with all things 80s: great songs, great hair and great wedding outfits!

This hugely popular musical comedy ‘The Wedding Singer’, based on the film with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The show is set in 1985 and rock-wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer.

He is jilted at the altar by his beloved fiancée Linda and falls into a deep depression. Robbie is so distraught that he then makes every wedding as disastrous as his own.

When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. The only trouble is that Julia is about to be married to Glen, a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980’s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just have been the coolest guy in the room.

The cast of 55 students, aged from 12 - 18, have had huge fun rehearsing this show. Director Jan Hobson says: ‘ This is such a great show for a big company. It has some challenging and colourful lead roles, but also lots of cameo roles that add richness to the production. It is a very funny show and this year’s cast includes some very talented comic actors - it is going to be a delight to watch.’

Lead boy Will Carey, who plays Robbie Hart, the wedding singer says: ‘ The Wedding Singer is one of the maddest shows I’ve ever been involved in. My role, Robbie Hart, has been great fun to discover and I can’t wait to bring him alive onstage for audiences in July.’

Katie Duke, who has now done six productions at Steyning says: ‘ The Wedding Singer is a vibrant, exciting musical that’s been a joy to be part of. My character ‘Holly the waitress’ has been one of my favourite roles to play since performing in musical productions. She’s feisty, wild and a lot of fun! This may be one of the most energetic and lively role I’ve played. It’s been challenging but another amazing experience. I can’t wait for ‘The Wedding Singer’ to hit the stage!’

The young performers are supported by a team of ex pupils, who return to provide lighting, sound, direction, set design and choreography. Jan Hobson says: ‘ It is truly a reflection of the ‘Steyning family’ past and present. We are so fortunate to have these wonderful former pupils, now successful in their own performing arts careers, return to support our current students. It all makes for a brilliant theatre experience.’
