LETTER: Take pride in our amazing NHS

After an eight-day stay in East Surrey Hospital ending on 19th June I wish to relate the following.

I entered through A&E, spent two days in the Acute Medical Unit and the rest in Tilgate Ward. At no time did I experience anything but wonderful, wonderful care and kindness from all nursing, care and ancillary staff.

The real drama started some time after 4.30am on the 17th. There was some sort of cataclysmic event in the bed next to mine.

I was awoken by lots of cleaning/scrubbing noises etc. plus flashing lights on the floor at 5.45am. All patient screening curtains were drawn and the voice of the nurse in charge was saying ‘Fifteen to twenty minutes more’. We were free to move about at 6.15 and my needs were desperate!

At 6.30 the ward was back in normal action as if nothing had occurred although the bed next to mine was now empty.

In charge of all this wonderful teamwork was a 27-year-old nurse in the 9th hour of his twelve hour shift when the frantic activity started; his second consecutive 12-hour night shift.

His leadership ensured that dire events were taken care of in a very professional manner with the least possible disruption to the ward.

All we seem to get are negative headlines about the failures of the NHS but here is a story of how fantastic young men and women work tirelessly to protect, take care of and justify the country’s pride in this amazing institution.

I have insufficient words of praise for what I experienced and I am in no way connected to the service or the staff involved.
