LETTER: Horsham should have full facilities

I am a founder member of Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club and was shocked to hear that the new leisure centre would not include suitable facilities for our club.

This is not what Cllr Chowen led us to believe when the leisure centre was first discussed. We were to be moved to another area and included in the leisure centre with suitable facilities.

I have been trained and have qualified as a coach to be able to help newcomers to the club and at the moment our membership is about 430 ranging in age from eight to 94.

What other club has that many active members – and we do need to be active to maintain good health especially as we get older.

I taught a newly retired new member just recently and he was so pleased to find something to do to get him out from under his wife’s feet! We all need our own space from time to time and the bowls club can often provide that.

We have a good restaurant providing reasonably priced meals for members and guests and also a bar.

Besides social bowling, playing club leagues and 90 odd home matches a year we have other clubs coming in to use our facilities such as Probus, Alzheimer’s, blind and disabled bowlers and also outdoor clubs when their season has closed.

Because we have such good facilities the County Youth Academy hold their junior finals here as do the English Bowls Youth Development Scheme. It is a great sight to see the green full of young bowlers all under the age of 18 - not everyone wants to play football - and their bowling is of a very high standard.

There are a lot of lonely people out there and to be able to come and play bowls or just watch and talk to friends or perhaps have a meal can be a lifeline for people who have lost their loved ones.

I don’t think that Horsham councillors have been given correct information in relation to the bowls club by whoever was driving this project forward.

With all the new housing being built the need for our club can only grow. Horsham is going to be a big town and it should have a full range of facilities. There is no other indoor bowls club in the HDC area.
