LETTER: Courageous to question secrecy

Young he might be but congratulations are due to Cllr Connor Relleen for his having the courage to question the secrecy which hangs like a Victorian pea-soup fog over the Conservative majority on Horsham District Council. He deserves a medal for speaking out.

I can well imagine elder members of the local Tory Party patting him on the shoulder with words of advice - “We like team players here, young man - so as a new boy, don’t ask too many questions - we’ll show you the ropes in due course”.

But luckily young Cllr Rellen was not won over by such patronising twaddle from his elders. He appears to be a perceptive individual who is not afraid to speak his mind. A rare quality in politics these days - he deserves to do well.

I have not been a member of the Tory Party for many moons although I did spend over ten years in the Young Conservatives as a member of its National Executive - followed by five years working for Conservative Research Department also the Press department at Central Office.

That was before the arrival of that ‘Marmite’ figure, Margaret Thatcher, and her policies of mass privatisation and dismissal of her so-called ‘Wets’ - being those cabinet colleagues of a civilised, liberal disposition. But it was the softly spoken, mild mannered Geoffrey Howe who finally brought the so-called ‘Iron Lady’ to her knees - having suffered her tireless bullying for years.

So all praise for young Cllr Rellen but not for Cllr Clair Vickers - that opinionated cabinet member that brought us the new massive housing and industrial development to the north of the town - without any meaningful public consultation.

Ms Vickers and her secretive cabinet colleagues should hang their heads in shame for the wholesale destruction of our once attractive market town of Horsham. How she can sleep at night is quite beyond me!
