LETTER: Campaigning for a fairer society

I would like to thank those electors who voted Labour and me during the general election. We saw an increase in our share of the vote and numbers of people who voted for us.

I met a great many people in Horsham over the past six months, and heard some sad and difficult stories from people who had been unfairly affected by the cuts of the last five years; and sadly more people will suffer under the draconian cuts that will be made by the new Conservative Government.

It was a hard fought campaign in Horsham, by Labour; we listened to your views and concerns, met with many groups such as the anti-fracking and Gatwick groups, took part in all the hustings and met the Rail future group that highlighted Horsham District Council’s lack of response to the railway companies about the housing development in Horsham and the lack of new investment as a result.

The Horsham Labour Party saw its share of the vote increase within the district council elections, and Labour will continue to grow and campaign for local people; we will never go away, we will always campaign for a fairer and just society.

The Liberal Democrats were punished for not being principled and honest in their policies.

The Liberal Democrats in Horsham were prepared to take the credit for the few positive things that happened within Government in the last five years, but could not take responsibility for the many bad decisions over the past five years.

This was even evident within local issues, for example the fact that the Liberal Democrats voted against the football club development, but during the campaign stating how much they had supported the football club development. Nationally and locally the Liberal Democrats were punished for their duplicity.

The Labour Party will campaign hard for the vulnerable within our society and for a sensible and workable relationship within Europe and the UK. In the next five years we will see harsh cuts within the NHS, and benefits, and education being led by dogma rather than an understanding of pedagogy, relationships with the UK will suffer and an increase in the low wage economy and zero hour contract employment.

Once again thank you for the opportunity to work in Horsham for the Labour Party. I will take away fond memories.

MARTYN DAVIS

Labour parliamentary candidate for Horsham 2015, c/o Wimblehurst Road, Horsham
