LETTER: Campaign over council secrecy

Congratulations on your anti-secrecy campaign at Horsham District Council. It is also alive and kicking at Arun DC, where we had a vote last week on the choice of a vice-chairman of the council (and thus chairman next year).

The choice was between a new Conservative councillor, with only nine months on the council, and myself, with 39 years’ experience on every committee and much else besides.

There was a secret ballot, and the Conservative was announced as winner, but a request for the voting figures, which were apparently close, was refused!

It is unbelievable that a result of a vote cannot be divulged. We have submitted an FoI request, only to be told that it will take 20 days to ‘process’ and possibly supply the figures!

I will keep you posted!
